3 Steps to Get Your Book in Newspapers

If you’d like to skip the agony of trying so hard to get book reviews in newspapers, relax, there is a better way. It works like this: write an article, provide it to newspapers and watch the clips roll in.

The two keys to making this work are 1) writing a good article and 2) providing it to the newspapers in a way that works for them. Here is how to write the article.

First, remember that you are writing the ACTUAL article that will appear in the paper. It needs to follow journalistic style. Start with a headline that is catchy and is something you would see in the paper. (Hint: It is NOT anything like "New Book Released"). Use the headlines in this newsletter as an example to get your started. Then in the first paragraph state a common problem or trend that is affecting people.

Your second paragraph should be a quote from the author offering the solution to the problem or commenting on the trend. Your book information should be embedded in this quote. Then include 3-5 tips that would be helpful to readers. Finish with a strong call to action that includes a reason (besides buying your book) to visit your website. Now you’re ready to submit it to newspapers.

You can get a list of newspapers and sending it out yourself or use a service that will do it all for you. There are a couple to choose between. We would love to introduce you to the right service for your book.

NEWSPAPER / MAGAZINE

Your book will work for print if:

  • You have a tips-based story
  • Your story it of interest to a wide variety of people, and at the same time unlike anything they have ever heard (newspapers)
  • Your story is of interest to a unique and defined group of people, like scrapbookers, small business owners, fitness enthusiasts, equestrians, antique collectors, etc. (magazines)
  • You can connect your story to timely news, be it Mother’s Day, National Clean Off Your Desk Day, Back to School, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, etc.
  • Vibrant visual images accompany your story (especially important for getting in magazines)

Common Topics for Print Coverage:

Unique, expert commentary on celebrities (including musicians, TV stars, movie stars, athletes, etc.),

Announcing results of a survey or top list (top foods to avoid, top vacation destinations for teens, common mistakes owners make when starting a business, etc.),

Emotional/debatable topics (end-of life issues, extending or ending rights to a group of individuals, legislation being passed), etc.
