The shirt that cost $10,000 (Is one in YOUR drawer?)
A call came in today from a good friend of mine.
This distressed publisher couldn’t believe what had just happened to her.
Right around Christmas last year, “Susan” called, bubbling with excitement. A major book distributor called her with an impressive order for 500 books. Hot potato! “This could be the start of something big!” she exclaimed.
The start of something big? This veteran expert had already been on national TV twice in the last two months. She already hosts her own TV segment on her local NBC affiliate. She starts almost every morning with a radio interview, and impressively sells books from all of her publicity.
This wasn’t the start of something big.
It was a well-earned continuation.
And then her call came in this morning . . .
“I need help. The distributor just sent back $10,000 worth of books. They are all damaged. I will not be able to sell them in bookstores. They returned almost all of the books they ordered. What do I do?”
Susan got her books into bookstores,
but she lost her shirt doing it.
She lost her $10,000 shirt!
Luckily for Susan, she HAS been such a successful publisher. She’s smart and savvy, well-connected and fast-acting. While this is probably one of the worst days in her history in publishing, she has built enough revenue streams from enough outlets that she WILL bounce back.
But what about you?
How well would you survive a
$10,000 setback like this?
When most publishers think of selling books, they still think of selling books in bookstores. You probably do, too. So if you want to sell books in bookstores without losing YOUR shirt, check this out:
